hunger increases after eating

by Jeanie

Hi Misty,
I am sure it is probably an insulin release issue but I often find myself temporarily hungrier immediately following a meal than when I first began the meal.

It usually passes after a short while and I don't continue to eat as I know the hunger doesn't add up. Am I making sense!?

Is this an issue that will improve with time?
Thanks Jeanie

Hi Jeanie
Thank you for your question! First, let me say how pleased I am that you are intuitively getting to know your body! Obviously, you know that you have blood sugar/insulin issues.

Yes, it does seem that the insulin release is in fact making you hungry. There are generally a couple of reasons one experiences hunger 1-2 hours after they eat. They have either not consumed enough protein and fat or, the insulin release following the meal is causing hunger. For those who have had insulin resistance issues, this can be problematic.

As we now know, insulin has many functions. While it can't get glucose into the cells efficiently when they're in a state of insulin resistance, insulin still performs its other tasks, including converting carbohydrates to fat and inhibiting stored fat from being burned. Reduce the carbohydrate to reduce the amount of insulin secreted.

In the IR person, that number may be much higher. Many people with IR have a family history of diabetes.

This might be your sign Jeanie to lower your carbohydrate a bit more to eliminate this larger release.

Let me know what you did whether reduced carbs or pushed through your hunger. It will be helpful to others.

As Always,
In good health

You might try some chromium for sufficient insulin use.

Let me know if you decide to try it!

Misty,

I have been taking 1000mcg of chromium the last few days and have noticed far less hunger.

Congratulations! I'm so glad the chromium was our answer. It increases insulin sensitivity and is being studied now the effects of how exactly it works. I'm so pleased it worked for you! There are some diabetes experts out there that claim "the studies" aren't strong enough for both chromium and cinnamon. I beg to differ and often wonder who funded said studies. Insulin manufacturers perhaps?

Anecdotal, clinical experience in so many situations can be beneficial.

Few foods are rich sources of chromium in the Western diet, the best being organ meats, mushrooms, wheat germ, broccoli and processed meats. It is theorized that Stone Age people ingested more chromium than modern people because they regularly ate organ meats from the animals they hunted (which contained higher levels chromium as well as other trace elements)

A Disclaimer For Diabetics: It is important to note that persons with diabetes who are on insulin or other anti-diabetic medications should check with their doctors before supplementing their diets. Because chromium may decrease the amount of insulin resistance present, it may change the type or amount of medication needed to treat the diabetes and/or the frequency with which blood sugar monitoring needs to be done.

This is especially important for those persons with diabetes who are under tight blood glucose control. Adding supplemental chromium in this situation has the potential to cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).

I am IR as well, and sometimes feel hungry within 1-2 hours after eating. I eat lc too. I think I will try the chromium and see if that helps.

Chromium dosage question
by: Colette

I just started adding the chromium and I think it is helping with the hunger issues. The bottle says take 1 a day before I eat. Each tablet is 1000 mcg. Should I be taking more? I am IR.

Chromium

Hi Misty,

The Chromium is working...when I remember to take it..lol..

Anyway, I just joint the gym this past week, and I am sore...but its a good sore. It means I have been working my muscles. Tomorrow I meet with my trainer and get my routine set up. Last 2 times I went I rode a stationary bike for 2 miles and then walked the track for 5 laps. I also enjoyed some water aerobics and the whirlpool and sauna. The gym we have here in town is associated with the hospital. Its basically a wellness center and they also have rehab. My trainer is going to shake routines up for me every month or so, so I won't get bored.
