Cravings carbs during high-risk pregnancy

I am 14 weeks, diabetic, and over 35yrs old.

I find myself craving only carbs despite the affect they have on my sugars. Why is this and what can I do to balance things out?

I already have a balance with my proteins, sweets, fruits and veggies, and fats. Not sure what else I can do to cut down on the carbs.

Please help!

Craving Carbs

Hi Katina

We often crave carbohydrates because we have deficiencies. You mention that you are diabetic which is a notorious reason for craving carbohydrates.

Gestational diabetes can be dangerous for both Mother and baby so managing your fast acting carbs is a good idea.

Eat more healthy fats and proteins and make sure your carbs are in the form of vegetables, a small amount of root vegetable like 1/2 sweet potato and consume other roots like parsnip and turnip in stews, roasted or mashed with cauliflower.

It is also notorious to have a protein aversion during pregnancy. This could be a reduced Urea synthesis.

Some recommendations I have include:

Magnesium-Epsom salt soaks for the feet or entire body. Add 1/2 cup sodium bicarbonate for greater uptake. Diabetics are notoriously low in magnesium. This will also help your cravings.

Add 1/2 tsp. of apple cider vinegar to a small glass of water and drink during each meal to lower blood glucose

Reduce to eliminate processed foods
